American Goulash (macaroni with ground beef)

1/2 lb elbow macaroni, cooked and drained
1 lb ground beef (can use part sausage)
1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 (28 oz) can tomato sauce (I use pomi boxed tomatoes)
1 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp basil
1/2 tsp salt, or to taste
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
opt: 1 cup (4 oz) shredded Cheddar or mozzarella cheese

In large skillet or saucepan, over med-high heat, brown the ground beef, green pepper, onion and garlic until no pink remains in the beef, stirring to break up beef.
Reduce heat to medium-low and add remaining ingredients, except cheese.
Simmer 5 to 7 minutes, or until heated through.
If desired, sprinkle with cheese and simmer 1 to 2 more minutes, or until cheese is melted.
