Chile Con Queso

1 T oil
1 onion, chopped *
1 clove garlic, minced *
1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes, drained *
1 (4 oz) can diced green chili peppers, drained *
1 lb american or velveeta cheese (part cheddar and/or cream cheese, if desired)
1 tsp chili powder
opt: tobasco
salt, pepper to taste

* can use a jar of salsa instead

Saute onion in oil until tender, add garlic for 30 seconds. Add tomatoes and simmer until thickened.
Reduce heat to low. Add cheese and chili peppers and stir just until melted. Season with chili powder and tobasco to taste. Serve warm with baked tortilla chips.
